A hazard and operability (HAZOP) study is a design review technique used for hazard identification, and for the identification of design deficiencies which may give rise to operability problems. HAZOP is most commonly applied to systems which transfer or process hazardous substances or activities where the operations involved can be hazardous and the consequences of failure to control hazards may be significant in terms of damage to life, the environment or property. HAZOP was developed in the UK chemical and petrochemical industries as a means of assessing the safety of complex plant and processes which had significant hazard potential. Its use has been extended to safety studies for industrial, nuclear and nuclear-chemical plant, and offshore installations. A HAZOP study is carried out using a structured approach by an experienced multi-discipline team, facilitated by a HAZOP leader.
Enigma Mutiara are specialists in HAZOP services for Oil, Gas, Petrochemical and Oleochemical/Edible Oil Industries, aiding the client in meeting the challenges of high standards in operations and process safety performance. ENIGMA MUTIARA provides state-of-the-art Process Hazard Analysis and HAZOP services.

We are highly experienced in carrying out HAZOP studies, for new and revamped client projects, to identify potential hazards and operability problems consistent with insurance, governmental/country standards and regulatory requirements.

ENIGMA MUTIARA can conduct these studies in a flexible manner, structured to meet each client’s special requirements. Alternatively, ENIGMA MUTIARA can provide a plan for the client to internally conduct these studies so that benefits are realized in the short term as well as over the life of the plant.

Scope of Work for HAZOP

  • Facilitate and record a specific HAZOP workshop for the Project as given in the description.
  • The workshop shall be held to discuss the key variables that constitute a HAZOP study taking into account all the risk potentials of the Project.
  • The HAZOP shall follow the ICI methodology.
  • The scope of the HAZOP shall cover all phases of operation and identify hazards that pose a threat to both personnel (in terms of potential fatalities) and the environment.
  • The HAZOP will cover process, utility and vendor P&IDs.

Proposal Requirements
In addition to the general instructions; the proposal shall detail:

  • A list of information and documents that are considered necessary before the HAZOP can be undertaken.
  • An estimate of the workshop duration
  • HAZOP facilitator will discuss the important requirements with the COMPANY prior to the workshop.

Deliverables
The following are the deliverables of the HAZOP study

  • HAZOP conducted with the use of software (PHA Pro)
  • List of actions in HAZOP worksheets and reports

The many advantages of an ENIGMA MUTIARA-led HAZOP study include:

  • Broad experience in the process technology based upon our operations and engineering and design exposure.
  • Reduced HAZOP session time/costs through extensive initial preparation based on prior HAZOP studies of similar units.
  • A flexible approach to client HAZOPs.
  • ENI conduct a HAZOP at the client’s site or at designated area selected by the client. It is often more advantageous to conduct the HAZOP at the client’s site for revamp projects. It allows easy access to unit operating history and participation by the unit operations staff.
  • The HAZOP can be phased in for greater planning efficiency, to meet client schedules or can be carried out on parallel tracks, using multiple teams.
  • ENIGMA MUTIARA can conduct the HAZOP at any stage of the design: an initial high-level PHA, FEED HAZOP (front-end engineering design), or post MFD - detailed HAZOP.
